For Grantseekers:
Step 2: Eligibilty
An applicant must meet the following criteria:
| Be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code and not classified as a private foundation under Section 509(a) of the Code. In selected cases, the Fund might consider support for projects sponsored by governmental entities. Organizations can also submit applications through a sponsoring organization if the sponsor has 501(c)(3) status, is not a private foundation under 509(a), and provides written authorization confirming its willingness to act as the fiscal sponsor. | ||
| For most program areas, be based in or managing significant activities in San Francisco or Alameda County. Within Alameda County, the Fund places the highest priority on projects in Oakland and Berkeley. The Jewish Life program area's geographic focus extends to the broader Bay Area. At present, the Creative Work Fund considers applications from Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, and Stanislaus counties. | ||
| Work toward missions and project goals that are clearly aligned with the Fund's grantmaking priorities. |
As a general rule, the Walter & Elise Haas Fund does not provide grants:
| To individuals or to for-profit entities. | ||
| For general fundraising benefits and events. | ||
| For endowment campaigns. Rare exceptions to this rule may be made for organizations that have a long-standing relationship to the Fund's legacy or when endowment goals are incorporated into a larger capital campaign. | ||
| For the creation of a film or video, or of original creative art work, except through the Creative Work Fund. | ||
| For scholarships or fellowships. |
