The California State Parks Foundation and California State Parks have embarked on a 34-acre wetlands restoration at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area in Bayview/Hunters Point, The project includes building a trail to connect the park to the regional Bay Trail as well as revegetating the wetlands with native plants, Working with Literacy for Environmental Justice, the Parks Foundation has created Bay Area Youth for the Environment, a volunteer, community engagement, and environmental education program for 30-40 Bayview youth, These youth will cultivate native plants, participate in community meetings and advocacy, and encourage other neighbors to become involved, The project matches the Fund's public parks goal in that it engages local residents in improving their communities, and it will result in restored park lands in a part of San Francisco with limited, usable space for recreation.

Friends of the Urban Forests - $35,000
-
Street trees make many contributions to quality of life in neighborhoods: these benefits are not shared equally across the city. The Fund's grant helps the Friends of the Urban Forest address gaps in tree plantings in the Bayview/Hunters Point, Richmond, Sunset, Visitacion Valley, and Western Addition districts. This one-year grant helps Friends of the Urban Forest recover from a drastic reduction in public funding. Because the Friends work involves hundreds of volunteers and community organizations in its plantings, it is well aligned with the Fund's emphasis on civic participation.

San Francisco Beautiful - $35,000
-
For nearly 20 years, San Francisco Beautiful has been supporting neighborhood improvement projects across the city through the Friedel Klussmann Grants Program. These small ($1,000-$5,000) grants supply neighborhood groups with resources they need to clean up graffiti, replace playground equipment, plant gardens, and make other enhancements to shared public spaces. In a time of severe cutbacks in city funds for public park improvement and maintenance, San Francisco Beautiful anticipates a significant increase in applications for these small grants. W&EHF's grant supports expansion of this grant program, focusing its contribution on citizen-led projects to improve public parks, playgrounds, and adjacent gardens.
