W&EHF's grant supports expansion of this grant program, focusing its contribution on citizen-led projects to improve public parks, playgrounds, and adjacent gardens. The San Francisco pilot will test a replicable 12-month "leadership learning path" with women executive directors of color. Using a coaching and peer support model, the program will enhance leadership and management skills, develop a sustainable learning community structure, and encourage ongoing professional development. The specific challenges faced by women executive directors of color will be documented and the efficacy of the pilot evaluated. In partnership with philanthropy, local government, and public and private financial institutions, the forums will expand the number and types of organizations working on asset building, engage the Federal Reserve System and other researchers to expand knowledge about the strategies that work best for low-income persons and communities, and increase the number and quality of asset-building policies introduced by state and federal policymakers. Preservation Park is a unique facility of 16 restored historic Victorian buildings on 2.6 acres adjacent to downtown Oakland. Thirty-seven nonprofit organizations are housed there, and the complex also includes shared conference rooms and open space. The purchase ensured the preservation of over 42,000 square feet of affordable nonprofit office and public meeting space. This grant assists the East Bay Community Foundation and EBALDC in addressing a short-term shortfall in general operating funds due to the timing and complex nature of the $6.9 million purchase. This leadership program is an important component of Horizon's plan to build the capacity, competence, and stability of LGBT organizations as part of encouraging increased and sustained philanthropic giving in the LGBT community. The W&EHF provided early support for Red Tab during its formative years, but it now is in need of an infusion of new capital. Grant Amount: $10,000 Project Dates: 07/26/2005 through 07/25/2006 The Bridgespan Group - $50,000 Bridgespan is working closely with key mayoral and departmental staff to deliver a comprehensive business plan detailing the strategies, activities, implementation plan, milestones, and resources needed to implement San Francisco's Communities of Opportunity (COO) initiative. The goal of COO is to comprehensively address several geographically-focused and long-standing pockets of poverty in two southeastern San Francisco neighborhoods. Grant Amount: $50,000 Project Dates: 09/14/2005 through 09/14/2006 Tides Center - $25,000 Lead Organization: OaklandVOTE OaklandVOTE is a pilot project that seeks to bring to Oakland a successful Boston-based model that encourages civic participation in low income communities. It is designed to provide nonpartisan training and resources to a broad network of nonprofit organizations to help them incorporate voter education and outreach into their civic missions. Grant Amount: $25,000 Project Dates: 11/01/2005 through 11/01/2006 Tides Center - $40,000 Lead Organization: LeaderSpring This grant allows LeaderSpring to provide a comprehensive two-year leadership and management training program to a diverse group of thirty local nonprofit leaders. Increased job complexity, lack of resources, long demanding hours, and need for personal sacrifice have resulted in the widespread rapid turnover of executive leadership in the nonprofit sector. While a number of leadership programs address these concerns, LeaderSpring has demonstrated its ability to reduce turnover, and has developed substantial competence in working with women and people of color. Its comprehensive program incorporates management training, professional coaching, peer support, individualized study trips, and an active alumni network. Grant Amount: $40,000 [2005], $40,000 [2006] Project Dates: 12/07/2005 through 12/06/2007 Trust For Public Land - $75,000 Trust for Public Land is working to engage Potrero Hill neighbors in revitalizing a neighborhood playground used by many nearby families--including those living in private homes and an adjacent housing project. As a park improvement effort that engages a variety of neighborhood partners in working toward shared goals, the project advances the Fund's leadership priorities.
